Former Leith Academy Rector (1971-1982) passes away

All of us at Leith Rugby pass our thoughts to Douglas' family at this sad time.
- Jim Smith, Club President

It's with great sadness that we report the passing of former Leith Academy Rector, Douglas McKay, a fantastic supporter of Leith Rugby Club.

Douglas C McKay was educated at Montrose Academy and graduated M.A. with Honours in Geography from the University of Aberdeen in 1951. He taught successively at Queen Anne School, Dunfermline, Forfar Academy and Crookston Castle Secondary School in Glasgow before becoming Head Teacher at Tillicoultry School in 1963, then served as Rector of Alva Academy from 1967-1971 before taking up post as Rector of Leith Academy in 1971.

Douglas' interests went beyond the academic, and he was involved in the Scouts and Youth Club movements, and also played as an amateur goalkeeper for Dundee United. In 2009, Douglas was commended in the 'Pillars of Leith' poll, which sought to identify the greatest Leithers ever.

Douglas was a strong advocate of rugby, and of Leith Rugby Club during his time as Rector, and latterly, and was kind enough to attend, and present an award at our Awards Night in 2011.

Club President Jim Smith added that all of us at Leith Rugby pass our thoughts to Douglas' family at this sad time.

Douglas' funeral will take place on Tuesday January 23rd at 12pm, at Seafield.
