Match Report: Pete Mitchell
The 2's fixture against Haddington 3's had been cancelled by the opposition so the 2's travelled across Edinburgh to play a friendly against Boroughmuir Bears at Meggetland. Boroughmuir started brightly but the 2's defended bravely and competed comfortably with the opposition for the first 10 minutes. However the big opposition ball carriers slowly began to break tackles and get in behind the Leith defence to build up a sizeable lead. The opposition were well drilled and their big ball carriers were able to frequently offload in the tackle that allowed them to create phase after phase of quick ball that enabled Boroughmuir to build a comfortable lead by half time. Leith started the second half brightly and had several opportunities in the opposition twenty-two, however strong defence and leith's inability to take chances resulted in several wasted chances. Boroughmuir continued to score at regular intervals throughout the second half to build a huge lead by the time the final whistle was blown.
Although the 2's suffered a heavy defeat there was no disgrace in the performance. The opposition play two leagues higher and are current league champions. Sometimes in rugby you have to hold your hands up and say that you were well beaten by a bigger, better and stronger opposition and this was certainly the case at Meggetland on Saturday. Although the 2's suffered a heavy defeat, it allowed the players to get some much needed match fitness under their belts which will certainly help during the coming weeks when the league fixtures start.
Leith MoTM: Julian Mpofu stuck to his defensive tasks manfully in his first start at fullback, especially when putting in a try saving tackle when he managed to flatten an opponent who was at least twice his size!
