Broughton go top as Leith secure Try bonus despite loss

Leith finished off October on a disappointing note as they crashed to a third defeat in a row at Broughton. The bright autumnal weather continued in the capital as the sides took to the field in the last 3pm kick off of the year, Leith opting to play up the famous Wardie slope in the first half.

However Leith were caught a little on their heel's as Broughton made a blistering start to the game, scoring a quick 2 tries in the first 10 minutes. However the Leith team banded together and started to get themselves back into the game making, foraging into the Broughton half and trying to create opportunities to get back into the game. However, as quickly as Leith managed to get onto the attacking foot, they were back on the defensive as Broughton were clinical enough to punish a couple of defensive mistakes and score another quick double and get their bonus point up just shy of the half hour mark.

Leith wern't beaten yet however and were determined to make up for a poor start to the afternoon. And they did just that after some more good work to get back into the Broughton half created the opportunity and the forwards showed great hands as the ball worked through Mcleish, Lawrie, Aitken, Marshall, Forsyth and finally to number 8 McKinney as he was able to burst through a tackle before charging to the line. After Broughton were able to add their 5th of the Afternoon, Leith hit back yet again as Full back Dannfald was able to collect a kick down field and return with interest back inside. From the ensuing ruck Eoin Murphy was able to go straight over the middle and was able to perform the simple 2 v 1 and offload to returning winger Andy Barr who scored in the corner. Dannfald converted both tries which meant the score at the half 29-14 to the home side.

Leith took to the 2nd half playing down the slope and knowing that they were still in the game. And they started getting some joy with some nice play in the backs. Barr, Dannfald, Derrin and Homer all making some good runs whilst Wilkinson and Paterson were becoming more influential. Murphy made another trademark break through the middle of the Broughton defence and despite breaking through the last defenders tackle, it slowed him down enough meaning the covering defence was able to tackle him as he breached the 22m. Though Leith did manage to get closer to the hosts as from a covering kick Dannfald was able to field and pass inside to McLeish who in turn was able to give the pass off to winger Andy Barr who was able to beat a couple of defenders and offload again to Dannfald on the nearside who in turn was able to beat his opposite man with a fend before racing down the touchline at stretching over the line for the score in the corner. Conversion dropped just short leaving Broughton with a 10 pt lead.

However as quickly as the lead was bridged, the home team were able to extend it again with a quick try. The game went between the 22ms for a while as both teams looking to get back on the scoresheet, the home team looking to create an insurmountable lead whilst Leith new another try to them would mean it was game on again. Unfortunately for the Leither's it was the home team who were able to score from a 5 metre scrum. However Leith were not finished yet and still determined to get something from the game, some slick passes in the backs allowed full back Dannfald to pass to Robertson, Robertson to pass back to Dannfald......Dannfald back to Robertson......before Robertson passed it back one final time too Dannfald as he drew the last defender 5ms out and allowed the captain to score his 2nd of the afternoon, in the corner, which he duly then converted.

Broughton were able to add a final score and gloss to their performance as the game finished 48-26 to the home team, who are now at the summat of the league thanks to this result and others elsewhere in the league. However overall disappointment for Leith, having started off the month with 3 victories on the bounce and on a high to a very disappointing few weekends with now 3 defeats. All f this means that the games between now and Christmas are crucial if Leith want to get into the top 6 split following the conclusion of the first round of games. This starts next week at Academy Park as Leith take on the Edinburgh Uni Medics at 3pm, Your support is needed to cheer the boys on over the line.
