During an afternoon of all seasons at Penicuik, Leith went looking for a 3rd win on the bounce, but fell to a 24-8 defeat to a pumped up home side. We saw torrential rain, chest beating, some fisticuffs and the occasional wrestling move at the Old Pavilion. Standard afternoon really.
After an opening 20 minute spell that saw territory and possession exchanged frequently, it was the hosts who struck first, capitalising on a break in the backs to hammer over in the forwards from close range. Shortly after Kenny Dannfald had knocked over a penalty for Leith, the home side struck again with an eerily identikit try for a 14-3 half-time lead.
Early in the second half and playing down the slope Leith worked the ball through the backs to winger Andrew Paterson to dot down for what turned out to be the only joy for the Leithers, as after pulling to within 6 points, at 14-8, the home side duly knocked over a penalty, before scoring out wide late on to claim a deserved win.
A disappointing result for Leith, but best wishes to our hosts for the rest of the season. Next up for Leith is the visit of Ross High to Academy Park on Saturday October 7.
