Home side hold off second half rally from the visitors

Match Report by Kevin Greenan

Leith welcomed Penicuik to Academy Park and started the game strongly, turning over the ball at the first contact area and broke up the park but good scramble defence from Penicuik resulted in a knock on. This was a pattern for the game as Leith tried to keep the ball alive but decision making was a problem again. In the 9th minute Penicuik had a lineout passing the ball through their centres, Craig Smith made a scrag tackle and managed to rip the ball from his opponent, break through a gap and sprint upfield to run in for the opening score. Ben Wilkinson added the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Leith then wasted an opportunity to score when Marcos Teixeira broke the line but ignored his supporting players with only the fullback to beat, however it wasn't long before the home side did double their advantage, when in the 23rd minute a quick pass from Wilkinson released Smith in the centre and after the most outrageous dummy, he drove down the park, committed the full back and passed inside to the supporting Andrew Baxter for an easy finish. Wilkinson was successful with the conversion, 14-0.

Leith were now in full flight and Craig Williamson broke down the wing but delayed the pass to Baxter, who ended up flat when he did receive the ball and was tackled to the ground. Scrumhalf Dave Somerville picked up the ball, snipping around the edge of the ruck where the Penicuik winger tackled him but he tried to keep the ball alive throwing the ball blindly back inside but the ball was knocked on. Another try opportunity gone. Leith looked like they might regret the missed opportunities, especially when Penicuik crossed the try line for their opening score, converted for 14-7. With half time approaching Leith broke out again with Smith down the wing. He saw the space behind and kicked the ball. The foot race had begun with Baxter, Ross Marwick and the Penicuik full back, and when both Baxter and the full back dived to touch the ball down, the referee adjudged they had both been evaded by the ball, despite home claims that Baxter had grounded it - in any case Marwick was there to touch down and was awarded the score. Wilkinson successful with Con. 21-7 at half time.

Leith started the second half as they left the first resulting in them receiving a penalty inside Penicuik 22. Captain Stu Wilson decided on the points and Wilkinson duly obliged. 24-7. Leith made a few changes with Kenny Dannfald going in to Fullback. His first contribution was to let the ball bounce, then in trying to recover high tackled the winger, and received a yellow card. Leith reshuffled the back line, but Penicuik managed to cross the Leith try-line twice in the sin bin period. 24-19. Dannfald's return brought Leith back to full strength and within two minutes they were awarded a line-out on Penicuikā€™s 10 metre line, and following quick passing from Williamson and Dannfald, the latter allowed Nick Andrews to cross the Penicuik try line for the bonus point. Wilkinson successful with Con 31-17.

The visitors weren't finished yet though, and were awarded a penalty for Leith straying offside. With Leith thinking the penalty was 15 meters from the tryline they switched off when the ref ran to the five metre-line Penicuik took a quick tap to score, for 31-24. The final 5-10 minutes saw possession swing between both sides, but the respective defences held firm for a final score of 31-24. MOTM Ben Wilkinson for his perfect kicking display.
