Narrow win at Peffermill

Report by Kevin Greenan.

Leith were looking to make up for the defeat at the hands of Edinburgh Medics earlier in the season, and build on last weekend's big win over Trinity, to keep their promotion hopes alive. But playing on a surface that has not been good to them in the past was a big ask. The weather was not conducive to running rugby as the rain started just before the KO adding to the blustery wind. This showed straight from the KO when Leith took the ball and headed forward but the ball was knocked on in the contact. ( this seemed to be a theme for both sides thought the half)

Leith were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute and captain Ben Wilkinson decided to go for posts his kick was successful 0-3. Both sides tried to run the ball but the wind did not help making the game very stop start. Leith did have dominance at the scrum turning over ball, but were unable to take any advantage. They were awarded another penalty in the 27th minute which Wilkinson slotted over for a 0-6 lead. Leith did manage to string some play together breaking in to Medics 22. Medics defence were strong but they knocked the ball on during a tackle. From the resulting scrum Leith’s no8 Luke Mckinney picked-from No8 he passed to David Somerville, who fed Tomek Nawrocki, but the winger was tackled in to touch a metre from the try line. Half time 0-6.

Both teams tried to play more controlled rugby after the break but defences were on top. Unfortunately Leith strayed offside to concede a penalty which Medics converted 3-6 In the 55th minute Leith were awarded a scrum 8 meters from Medics try line. They drove Medics back, McKinney picked and drove over for the only try of the game. ( just before he was due to be substituted) conversion missed 3-11. Medic were awarded another penalty in front of Leith’s posts, which was duly knocked over, 6-11. This never looked like it would be a try fest, and both teams making mistakes. This was apparent when Medics worked the space well and passed to the wing it looked like a walk in try for the winger but he dropped the ball. Leith were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute, and Wilkinson was successful with the kick to take Leith two scores ahead. 6-14. Medics were not done though, breaking the Leith defence but a great try saving tackle from full back Andrew Baxter (using his head to stop the player) he was substituted straight after. Leith repelled some last attempts at their line fairly comfortably, and the game was over - Final score 6-14, and the second successive week that Leith have stopped the opposition scoring a try. Great defensive performance again.

MOTM was loosehead James Nimmo, showing strong ball carrying and disruptive play at the rucks and line outs.
