First home league defeat in 2 years

We'd waited a while for a first competitive fixture with old rivals Trinity Accies, with a league fixture between the sides missing from the fixture cards since 1994, and our last cup meeting coming in 1996. Saturday saw the fixture return at a well-attended Academy Park, but sadly it wasn't the result Leithers were hoping for, with our guests, including in their line up former Leith fullback Stephen Hutchinson, running away to a 22-0 victory after a close, physical battle.

Both sides gave away early penalties, and Trinity kicker John Spencer was the more accurate, taking 2 of his 4 opportunities to see Trinity to a 6-0 half-time lead in what must have been one of the least-entertaining, most-stop-start first halves in rugby history. Any imprint whatsoever on the story of this fixture it failed to make.

After a bright start at the beginning of the second half by Leith, camped as they were in the opposition 22, only to see several attempts to cross the line fall just short, Trinity began to take a stranglehold of the set-piece, thanks in no small part to on-loan prop Dale Ashworth, who came off the bench to aid the Trinity scrum, and was later awarded Man of the Match honours. Once the Trinity backs had an effective platform from which to operate, they began to play wider than the 12 channel, and scored 3 good tries to get to a 22-0 final score.

Credit to Leith for sticking gamely to the task, but an ability to win our own ball is imperative if we are to bring our own attacking threats, seen too little so far this term, into the game. Good luck to Trinity for the rest of the season, and we'll see you at Bangholm in January.

After the game, Club President John Murphy, presented Lauren Jones with a cheque for £770, raised at the club's recent Ladies Day, to donate to Maggie's Centres Edinburgh. Well done to everyone involved. For further information about the work undertaken by Maggie's Centres in supporting cancer sufferers, click here

Finally, a big thank you to all who attended the club's President's Day, it was great to have such a good support, despite not having much to shout about. The players hope to see as many of you as possible at Edinburgh Northern this coming Saturday.
