Leith undone by a Dalkeith purple patch

In a game that was otherwise one way traffic, a three try scoring patch in the first half saw Dalkeith home. The Dalkeith backs were a handful for the home side, but their fat boy forwards were amongst the unfittest I can remember seeing on a rugby pitch (and that includes over thirty five matches).

Leith pounded the Dalkeith line for the bulk of the second half, but stout defence held the home team to 1 try and in a sad echo of their international countrymen, white line fever prevailed. Make no mistake though, all in blue and white should have been proud of their performance as they fought all the way (even coach Bennett who has found his calling at prop and was one of the few amongst the athletic Leith forwards fat enough to play for Dalkeith).

A huge frustration for the homesters was the performance of the official. Dalkeith do stats and their coach told me the 1st half penalty count was 11- 2 in favour of the tubbies. We didn’t do as well in the second half count. I applaud the guy for giving up his Saturday, but some rule book revision is needed.

The relief on their tubby forwards faces was plain for all to see at the final whistle as they waddled to the dressing room via Greigs and the chippy.

All joking aside, Dalkeith are an abrasive, reasonably well drilled outfit and all at Leith wish them well in their promotion bid.

For our part the improvement in this young Leith team (YLT ya bass!) should not be underrated (along with the token old boys). We have gone from strugglers to promotion candidates in 2 seasons and if we can keep the present team together, we should be in the promotion shake up next season.

All that remains is for us to end the season with a decent performance against an improving Queensferry team.
